All sorts of things going on

Hi, all. I just want to provide a quick update. I’ve been working on my memoir, Freedom from Fat, and editing my other memoir, Chronicles of a Troubled Girl. Both are far along but still have a bit to go. The first draft of Freedom from Fat is not complete yet. It’s currently up to 46,000 words, but until I’ve reached my weight loss goals, I’ll still be working on it, because it chronicles my weight loss journey. I’m anticipating that I’ll be done with the first draft within one year. But sooner would be great, in more ways than one!

I’m currently on page 59 out of 230 in the editing/proofreading stage of Chronicles of a Troubled Girl, so I’m just about 1/4 through it. I only plan on doing one round of editing, since it is a compilation of journal entries and I want them to be as close to the original writing as possible. The entire memoir is 71,000 words.

Besides working on my books, I also have a freelance career during the week, and I focus on my health and fitness every day. I spend part-time hours working on all three aspects of my life. I like the variety, and they’re all important to me, so I have to manage my time to include them all in my life. I truly love writing books and connecting with my readers, working with my clients to help them with their publishing goals, and working out and eating healthy to have a healthy balance in my life. My weekends are spent relaxing, having fun, and doing housework. It’s quite challenging trying to fit everything in, but it’s the best way to live.

I have some book reviews I’ll be posting this week. One is How to Write an Essay, and the other is Wake up Successful – How to Increase your Energy and Achieve any Goal with a Morning Routine. Both are excellent nonfiction books that I’m looking forward to sharing with you.

So tell me how your life is going. What do you do for a career? What are your favorite things to do? What is your passion? I’d love to learn more about you. And let me know if you need help with writing or publishing, or if you’d like to be interviewed on my blog.

Above all, have a wondrous rest of your weekend!

Books Update

Posted in Books, Editing, Personal, Publishing, Reading, Self-Publishing, Writing tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 3:20 pm by Christine Rice

Hello everyone,

You’ve probably noticed that I’ve been posting mostly reviews and interviews for the past couple of months. And you are right. Since mid-October I haven’t posted about my books, namely my works-in-progress. Back in early September, I pretty much stopped writing in my works-in-progress due to publishing one of them (Freelance Writing Guide) and having a blog tour. I have no regrets, of course, because I was ecstatic about publishing a book I had been working on for eight months, and the blog tour was an absolutely great experience.

During the blog tour, I got my first client project in which I edited and formatted a novel. In case you didn’t know, I wear a few different hats in the publishing industry, including freelance writing, editing, and formatting in addition to being an author. A part of my freelance writing business is writing book reviews, which I post here for you all. Additionally, many of the books I review are free kindle books, so I hope I have helped you choose some great reads for cheap.

Shortly after my first client, I got another client, and many more, and I’ve been doing client projects ever since. My time is spent on client projects, reading and reviewing, blogging, networking, and also my health. In addition to being a writer, I am a health-conscious person, because I know without my health, I am nothing. So I work on being healthy, and becoming healthier, each day, in addition to my career.

I haven’t resumed working on my works-in-progress, besides updating Freedom from Fat with posts from my health blog, but I am 100% interested in finishing my works-in-progress and plan to do so in the future. I just cannot promise when that will be. Right now my interests lie in my health and growing my freelance business, and since I move through life naturally based on how it flows, I go with the flow.

I am certain that someday I will return to my works-in-progress, because I love writing and publishing books. It makes me so happy to get my thoughts and experiences in a permanent state that can be enjoyed for years to come. For now, I will go with the flow, and I will resume working on my works-in-progress once the flow returns to that part of my life.

I just wanted to reassure you all that I will be publishing the books I was working on, and I will keep posting on this blog.

Thanks for your kindness and support,

Christine

Checking in for the Week

Posted in Books, Editing, Publishing, Reading tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 7:29 am by Christine Rice

It’s been almost a week since my last post. The blog tour is currently being assembled. I spent a lot of time on Book Blogs trying to gain tour participants. Thanks to everyone who is participating! I really appreciate your generosity. I’ll be writing at least a couple of guest posts, there are eleven book reviews and seven interviews set up so far, plus one author bio and one excerpt for good measure. It’s going to be exciting! I can’t wait! If you’re scheduled to be on my blog tour, please email me with the date you want to reserve during the first three weeks of September (if you haven’t already). I will also be sending out a reminder email at the end of this week.

Freelance Writing Guide is coming along great! I am impressed by how it is turning out with the edits. I have finalized 7 out of 22 chapters, and I’m almost halfway through page-wise. I’m working on getting it all finalized by mid-month (middle of next week!).

I’ve also been reading a lot! I’m trying to keep up with my 3 books a month review schedule, while also editing and publishing my book. I have not overwhelmed myself too much this month. I had to decline some opportunities so that I will not have a nervous breakdown from it all ;)

I’m reading The Zul Enigma. I will be posting a review, probably sooner than later, since it is such a great book and I’m flying through the 500+ pages. I find it hard not to talk about the books I’m reading when they are really good. I love this one, because it is science-fiction and has a positive message and an adventuresome plot. It is definitely a page-turner!

Well, that’s about it. I hope you all have a great week!

Book Blogs and Publication

Posted in Books, Editing, Lulu, Publishing, Reading, Self-Publishing tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 11:00 pm by Christine Rice

I recently joined Book Blogs – an interactive, lively community for bloggers and authors. On the website, bloggers get the benefit of promoting their blogs, gaining followers to their blogs, and finding authors to host on their blogs. Mostly, the bloggers have “book blogs,” which means they publish book reviews, giveaways, and author interviews on their blogs. While, authors can promote their books and find bloggers to host them. During my short time there so far, I have been using the website for both purposes, since my blog is part book blog and I’m an author.

I have also been organizing my blog tour. Getting a blog tour together is a lot of work! I have found a few people that will be reviewing my book (thank you!); plus others that will be reviewing my other books, which is wonderful. I am still waiting to hear back from other bloggers I have contacted about my September blog tour, so I’m hoping for more opportunities. If you would like to host me on your blog in September, I can provide a complementary ebook copy of my book, Freelance Writing Guide, for a review or an interview. I’m really looking forward to the blog tour and the publication of my book.

In fact, I will be starting the second (and final) revision this week. It looks like mid-August is when I’ll be creating the cover and formatting the book for publication in various formats. It will be available in paperback and ebook from Lulu, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBookstore, and Smashwords (who also distributes to various retailers). The ebook will be available before the paperback, since I have to approve the paperback’s proof copy, which Lulu will be sending to me to review (and as you may know, shipping a product takes some time compared to electronic transactions).

It may sound easy to self-publish a book, but it’s very time consuming. The last time I self-published (in January of this year), I came out with second editions of three books, and I worked on the publication for days. Hopefully, this time will be a little easier, because I will only be publishing one book and I’ll be familiar with the formatting guidelines for the different publishers from last time (I will have to create multiple versions of my book, one for each publisher, because each publisher has their own formatting guidelines).

But, that is still weeks away! For now I will be taking care of blog tour communications and reading, as well as my other normal online activities. Starting  Thursday, I will be focusing on reading, editing, and posting updates on my progress. Lots to do!

Making Progress!

Posted in Books, Editing, Publishing, Reading, Writing tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:24 pm by Christine Rice

Hello all!

I’m pretty excited about what I’ve been accomplishing. Usually, finding motivation is a struggle for me, so I’m rather pleased about what I’ve done lately. As you know, Freelance Writing Guide is sitting on the back burner for a couple of weeks until it’s time to begin the second revision. In the meantime, I’ve been working almost every day on Chronicles of a Troubled Girl. I now have only two (out of fourteen) journals left to transcribe. Today I worked on the manuscript for more than 3 1/2 hours. As I’m typing up my journal entries, I find them really interesting, and I hope you will too.

It looks like Freelance will be published in August. I’m thinking about what type of cover I will do for it. I want it to look really sharp and professional, as it is a reference guide for professionals. For the ebook cover I recently did for My Not-So-Ordinary Life, I found the image on Dreamstime, so I will consider them for my next cover.

I do not know when Chronicles will be published yet, as it is larger than Freelance and a completely different kind of book. When I edit it, I will have a better idea about the publication date.

I’ve been flying through my reading as well. I published reviews for the two books I had scheduled for this month by July 19th, so I started a third book that I picked out myself. It is called The Chaosifier. It is a fantasy book that is well-written, descriptive, and creative. I really like it so far. The review will be posted next week.

I hope to keep my productivity up so that I can get my books out to you. Plus, I really would like to wrap them up, because I don’t like loose ends. And I have other books I plan to write, and I would like to write a fictional novel sometime. I’m thinking of taking a class in fiction writing, since I’m not skilled at it and don’t know what I’m doing :)

Have a great Sunday!

Editing “Freelance Writing Guide”

Posted in Books, Editing, Reading, Self-Publishing, Writing tagged , , , , , , , , , at 1:51 am by Christine Rice

I am currently in the editing stages of Freelance Writing Guide: What to Expect in Your First Year as a Freelance Writer. I have to admit that the manuscript is coming along nicely, as far as what I can see as I’m editing. It is pretty structurally sound and well-written. It mostly needs edits in grammar, formatting, and sentence structure. I’m glad I put in a little extra time when I wrote the first draft to make it less of a rough draft, because now the subsequent drafts are easier. I’m up to chapter 13 out of 22, so I’m more than halfway through the second draft (or first revision, as I like to call it). I’ve been editing at a rate of 2-3 chapters at a time, which takes me 1-2 hours.

My initial plan was to have the book published in September, but it could happen in August by the way things look right now. I need to set the book aside for a couple of weeks between edits. I can’t wait to have it complete so that I can work more intensively on Chronicles of a Troubled Girl to get that one wrapped up as well. I just don’t like loose ends laying around. I’m currently working on Freedom from Fat as well, which is an ongoing project, since I am working on accomplishing the feat I am writing about. Once I reach my weight loss goals, I will be ready to edit and publish that book. It will probably be in 2013.

I am reading a lot every day. I am currently reading Hell by John Prescott. I am enjoying that book, which is book 2 in a trilogy (Pray was book 1). I have stopped taking on new books to review, as I have a large pile already and want to get near the bottom before I take on any more. I am booked up through October, and like I said before, I don’t like loose ends.

Well, that’s about it. Things are going smoothly and I’m happy about that. To hear more frequent updates on my progress, “like” my Facebook page: Christine Rice ~ Freelance Writer and Author.

Keeping you Posted…

Posted in Books, Personal, Reading, Writing tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , at 3:10 am by Christine Rice

Okay, so I’ve taken a few days off from working on my manuscripts in order to get some extra sleep, get ahead in my reading, exercise, write blog posts, and upload new covers for two of my books. I also spent time with my husband and even had a day where I hardly worked, which I haven’t done in a long time.

It is time, however, to buckle down and get back to work (at least the writing/editing part). I need to edit Freelance Writing Guide, and my goal is to have the first revision done by the end of July. I also have to finish up “Chronicles of a Troubled Girl,” which I only have less than 1/3 left to write. That book is coming along quickly now, but will slow down a bit as I work on editing the first book.

By the way, I got a new desk chair–a rolling one with arm rests that is comfortable. I’ve wanted a new chair for the past 6 months. Finally, I have a real desk chair made for a writer!

So, starting tomorrow I will be super productive and not spend too much time dealing with online things. Who plans on being productive tomorrow? I know it’s Friday, but every day is a chance to start anew :)

Back to reading and writing

Posted in Books, Reading, Writing tagged , , , , , , , at 9:36 pm by Christine Rice

It’s been almost a week since I did any reading or writing in my books. I got involved in other life activities and put my work on the back burner. I feel refreshed and ready to dive back in, and I have some catching up to do.

So, last night I dipped my toes in the water. I read about 25 pages in Infinite Exposure. I’m down to the last 70 pages and it’s really exciting. I can’t wait to finish and write the review.

Last night I also wrote nearly 1,000 words in Chronicles of a Troubled Girl. Rereading my journal entries for this book is an eye-opening experience, especially since I didn’t have an easy life emotionally. Adolescence was difficult, I have to say, but things are pretty smooth right now. However, I’m always working on something in order to try to better my life experience.

I’m looking forward to a change of pace next week because I’ll be reading some poetry. I just hope my energy and motivation to work continues.
